10 super fun things to do in Melbourne this Summer

things to do in melbourne

A few of the Big Boys favourite things to do in Melbourne this summer. Not including our favorite topless restaurant and adult birthday party venue and our go to for bucks party games. Most of these are low cost and a few are free. Get amongst it!

So here they are the 10 things to do in melbourne this summer…

Australian Open

This tournament runs from the 19th  Jan to the 1st  Feb. Whether you’re glued to the action on centre court or just have a ground pass for easy access to the Heineken tent there’s a lot to see at Melbourne Park. One spectacle is the grassy screen viewing areas as female fans dress to keep cool. We always seem to get  a heatwave for the Australian Open.

Don’t just complain about Aussie hopefuls – have a crack?! This year anyone handy with a racket can enter this open competition for a wildcard entry!

Street Parties

In recent years Chapel  and Brunswick street festival,  office favourite things to do in Melbourne, were discontinued. This was mainly due to council’s insurance liability for the few bad eggs who got messy and had fights or accidents. A couple of smaller new street parties started last year and this year. Street parties are unofficially BYO but don’t flaunt your booze. If we all play nice Melbourne might revive the epic street party era of the 90’s!

Port Royal Street Party is one of the new ones – on the 18th of Jan in Port Melbourne. Legendary rockers Cosmic Psychos are headlining.  Here’s the lineup and details

Sydney Road street party  winds up Brunswick Music Festival on Sunday 1st March. Deep in the heart of hipster territory; I saw more hot girls here last year than at a Big Boys Club event (well, almost). You will, however, need a beard and tattoos to have a shot with them. Here’s the lineup of bands at this year’s Sydney Road Street Party

St Kilda Festival street party  is one of the only originals to have battled on with 2015 their 30th anniversary. On Sunday 8th Feb there’s 5 stages with bands and DJs, extreme sports demos including freestyle motocross jumping and heaps more – here’s their site

Cricket

No list of Summer things to do in Melbourne is complete without a cricket match

Tempers ran high as we took the first 2 games of Australia India test. No doubt there’ll be more sledging and fiery play on Boxing Day at the MCG as our boys honour Phil Hughes. We play India again at the MCG on the 18th in the One Day International tri series.

In Big Bash Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades battle for supremacy at Etihad on the 3rd of Jan with a rematch at the G on the 10th.

Outdoor cinema

About 10 years ago the only outdoor movies were Moonlight Cinema in the Botanical Gardens. It’s a romantic place for a date as you can bring your own picnic and booze. As the movie starts at dusk hordes of bats fly out over the Yarra.

Some years ago I was keen on an Irish backpacker chick. I arranged to take her and a couple of girlfriends to see Aussie classic ‘Lantana’ at Moonlight cinema. The ‘couple’ turned out to be 5 other girls who were shitfaced when I picked them up. They brought casks of goon with them to the gardens and disturbed the rest of the audience so much I had to convince them to leave. While I was busy managing her mates my date had quietly gotten paralytic.  I could only drag her into the backpacker hostel and  go home.

Unless your date is an alcoholic Irishwoman Moonlight or any of these other great  outdoor cinemas in Melbourne, are a romantic thing to do in Melbourne on a summer night

White Night

This festival only started in 2013. We pinched the idea from Paris, where it’s been running for ages. From 7pm to 7am on the night of Saturday 21st of Feb you can see spectacular free visuals  and performances in the central city area. The biggest drawcard of White Night is giant lightshows and projections which turn the city’s buildings into trippy, moving multi-coloured works of art. To see what I’m talking about check out the Christmas projections on the town hall

White Night is worth keeping your kids up. Despite the late hour it’s chilled and family friendly with less drinking and rowdiness than you’d expect. Public transport runs all night to get you there and back. The program for White Night 2015 was just released. Use their ‘My night’ app to plan what to see with a minimum of extra walking. Before 9pm or after 11.30 you’ll avoid the peak crowds which make it hard to move.

Live music is promoted as being part of the night but isn’t organiser’s (City of Melbourne) strongpoint. Previous concerts were super crowded with crappy PA.

Enter the Moomba Birdman Rally

If you don’t win the tennis grand slam as a wildcard there is still a chance for glory. The Moomba birdman rally is on the 8th of March. (Technically Autumn but making and testing your craft is a summer activity).

The Birdman Rally is a fundraising comp where raising a few bucks for a charity of your choice entitles you to build a craft you’ll fly off a  platform over the Yarra.  ‘ Penguin’  class entries are in it for a laugh. ‘Hawk’ class entrants spend months on preparation and are looking to get some serious hang time. Even if you’re not competing – one of the most popular fun things to do in Melbourne is watch the Birdman Rally.

Soccer – A league and Asian Cup

Excitement is building over A-league with matches on these balmy summer evenings. As with stars v renegades in the Big Bash cricket, you can watch a Melbourne vs Melbourne feature this summer. Victory and City clash at AAMI park 7.30pm January 18th

Whilst it’s not as much fun since they started sending 2 cops for every supporter you could take some flares to liven up this fun things to do in Melbourne on a summer night!

There hasn’t been much fanfare but expect to see quality play when the Asian Cup kicks off in Melbourne in a couple of weeks. Opener is Rectangular Stadium (the official name of AAMI park) with Socceroos vs Kuwait on Jan 09. Tickets for this game and a heap of other international playoffs here

Super Rugby

On the 21st of February Big Boys founder ‘Jazzy’ Jeff will be unable to speak above a whisper. On the night of Feb 20th the fanatic Melbourne Rebels member will be at AAMI park screaming himself hoarse as they take on 2014 Super Rugby champs NSW Waratahs.

Join him to see some other hometown Big Boys crush the Tahs or go to AAMI park the week after to see the Rebels tame the ACT Brumbies on the 28th

Underwear Fun Run

At 3pm on the 14th Feb is the inaugural Melbourne Cupid’s Undie Run. You don’t have to be much of a runner to do this fundraiser for kids with tumours – it’s only a kilometre. Apparently the main attraction is the post race party. Run in a Valentine themed outfit if you’re too shy for undies. We’re not suggesting going to Beach road just for a perve, even though it could  be one the fun things to do in Melbourne on Valentine’s Day.
